What is happening in week 14
Doctors count pregnancy weeks from the first day of your last period, so week 14 sits in the second trimester (week 14 to week 27). That is about 26 weeks to go until week 40, and about 3.2 months by a rough conversion. At around week 14 the baby is about 8.5cm long, kicking and swallowing amniotic fluid.
Your baby
The NHS guide gives about 8.5cm, roughly a kiwi fruit. The head is becoming rounder and more in proportion with the body. The baby kicks, although you probably cannot feel it yet, and swallows small amounts of amniotic fluid that the kidneys filter and pass out as urine.
Your body
Sickness and tiredness may ease and your appetite may return. Yellow stains in your bra can be colostrum, your first milk. Round ligament pain at the side of the belly is common.
This week’s to-do
- Eat a balanced diet; you do not need extra calories at this stage, and gaining too much weight is not good for you or your baby.
- Sleeping on your stomach is fine while the bump is small, but the NHS advises sleeping on your side after week 28.
- Keep up gentle exercise; the NHS suggests building towards 150 minutes a week.
